Impacts of Information Technology on Society in the New Century

On January 1, 1990 the World Wide Web was born when Sir Tim Berners-Lee wrote his proposal for what would become the blueprint for today’s web. By 1994 Marc Andreesen had launched the first widely popular browser that allowed users to access websites using their internet connection. The world began to connect by computers and soon, in light of this technology, new advancements in information technology were made.

The Internet has changed society dramatically over its relatively short life span because it makes gathering information so much easier than before. Instead of finding books or having to go through volumes of documents, all you have to do is type your search into Google and in seconds you can find any piece of information you need. This provides easier access to knowledge in a time when knowledge is power.

Information Technology has a large impact on society by allowing people to communicate in new ways that were unimaginable before Information Technology was born. Thanks to advances in Information Technology, we can visit with family and friends from around the world through Facebook, Snapchat, Skype or other forms of social media without having to spend money on airfare to visit them.

We can call our loved ones from anywhere in the world, at any time of day or night, because mobile phones allow us to make calls whenever we want or need to. Instant messaging services such as iMessage and Whatsapp have allowed people who aren’t together at the same moment in time to still be able to convey their thoughts and feelings almost instantly while video chatting allows us to see who we are talking to in ways that were previously impossible.

The Internet has also had a huge impact on how people do business, allowing the sale of products and services between consumers and companies situated all around the world. The consumer can purchase products online not just from stores located nearby but from any store across the globe. This allows consumers more flexibility in what they get while businesses have an easier time finding customers across the country or even the world. Not only does this remove geographical barriers, but it also removes financial ones by allowing buyers to find more competitive prices for their desired product or service without having to drive all over town looking for them at lower prices.

The ease of doing business over the internet has allowed businesses large and small to compete with even the biggest companies from around the world, removing barriers to entry for entrepreneurs who previously couldn’t compete with much larger businesses because of how expensive it was to start a business or advertise themselves. Now, all you have to do is create a website and you’re ready to go!

The Internet has also created a worldwide community that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well as services such as Wikipedia where anyone can become an author. This opens up doors for those who might not have been heard before by providing them with an outlet through which they can share their ideas with others from around the world. The access provided by Information Technology allows those who were once isolated from society now be able to communicate and learn about other cultures and ideas that they previously would not have been exposed to.

The Internet has also made the world smaller as it is now easy for anyone to communicate and share their ideas with those around them, no matter how far away they may be. Thanks to Information Technology, everyone can find a community where they belong thanks to online social media communities such as Facebook groups where you can find people who share your interests or beliefs who live nearby or even across the globe. This allows people who might struggle socially in person an outlet through which they can connect with others like themselves around the world.

Information technology changed society forever by allowing us to easily access knowledge that was previously stored in books or documents making learning easier than ever before. It has broken down geographical barriers by allowing us to easily communicate and do business with those around the world.

It has allowed those who might have been socially isolated an opportunity to find a community where they can belong as well as giving those hidden gems in our society a platform upon which their ideas and knowledge can be shared with the rest of us through Wikipedia and other online forms of information sharing. Information technology has changed the course of history forever by creating a connection between all people across the globe thanks to the Internet. While it is only one part of many things which drive change, it certainly created a wave that will not soon stop crashing onto our shores.
